Traci Taylor, principle interior designer at Arise Interiors, was interviewed by Coastal San Diego Homes & Estates.

“When placed properly, mirrors can also enhance our surroundings as a design element. Smart technology has also equipped mirrors with computer screens, TVs, cameras and voice recognition. We asked Traci Taylor, principal of Arise Interiors in San Diego, to talk about how to use mirrors in the home.”

During the conversation Traci answered several questions about best placements for mirrors in the home. See one of the questions below:

Q: In your view, what is the best thing mirrors offer in interior design?
A: The best use of mirrors at home is to increase the amount of natural light in a room and creating a double view. For example, if you have an ocean view window, you can place a mirror on the opposite wall and have two ocean views, more natural light and more blue color than you could get with a coat of blue paint. The view can be of mountains or a green garden; a mirror will double it. You also increase your light source in the evenings by installing a mirror next to a table lamp. One of my favorite things to do is to use a mirror to reflect a piece of art — behind it or on an opposite wall — so you have double the impact. Of course, the same concept goes for clutter. If your mirror is placed in a cluttered room, you will have double the clutter.
