To use the contemporary and earthy materials to inspire the new spaces. The spaces were all redesigned to connect people, encourage communication and be used in a variety of ways.

Discovering Opportunities
for Accommodation

The client had an abundant amount of area to work with to create several different spaces within their one space, on top of a large amount of natural light.

  • The original kitchen was outdated with a massive and overbearing brick island and hood that restricted the movement in the kitchen as well as the visual flow. With the open floor plan, the space functioned poorly and the outdated cabinetry and appliances didn’t fit with the feel of the home.
  • The general layout of the kitchen remained the same but was updated with contemporary and earthy materials.
  • We used the dining space in a more traditional social hall set-up with a large dining table and restored the original brick fireplace.
  • The large bathroom had a vast sunken area for the tub and shower made the space look extra outdated.

Before and After

KITCHEN

BEFORE

One of the most dramatic changes in the new design was the kitchen island. We removed the original island and created a smaller, more efficient one with a unique and contrasting bar extension to define the seating area. The hood was replaced with an appropriately sized, modern, stainless and glass one that opened the view into and out of the kitchen.

AFTER

The custom overlay cabinetry is a walnut slab door on the base run and west elevation with custom finished grey upper cabinets adjacent to the open wall system to create a lighter feel and bring attention to the exterior space. Textures of the existing brick from the fireplace are complimented by the mosaic back splash in the kitchen. Custom cabinetry was added adjacent to the dining space for storage and desk area and to create unity in the two spaces.

BATHROOM

BEFORE

The existing space had a large sunken area for the tub and shower.  It created an awkward space with the feeling of a void, and to top it off, the finishes were very dated.  Bringing the floor surface up to the same level was the first step, and by utilizing the large window, the outdoor area became focal point rather than detail.

AFTER

Additionally, we were able to create a separate room for the toilet to further enhance the spa-like feel of the design. Lots of glass and clean lines create an open feel and let the space have more breathing room. The soft tones and luxury materials make this master bath a place where you want to spend time rather than simply going through the routines.

The final result

Contemporary open spaces inspired by the existing earthy materials of the home made this La Jolla master bath and kitchen renovation complete.
